HiFi Magazin 10. 1982/3.

    Our English Synopsis

 1. Audio Culture

This issue included we have appeared ten times already: not enough to
celebrate a jubilee but sufficient to restate our aims and know our
place in the world. Audio magazines of the technologically developed
countries are only in a seemingly easy situation. They have to chose
or should select the best among thousands of great equipment. While
our duty, come what may is to find for our audience possibly one such
set that combines quality and reasonable price.

 2. Soundservice

Space for those desiring to inquire, needing advice, whising to
comment or argue or even to advertize.

 3. Time Enclosed in the Recording

The great performances and recitals have been recorded 30, 40, 50
years ago. We wonder if playing these records today one would hear the
same music. Sometimes it seems that music and its time escaped from
the records (audience and reviewers declared the recordings dead). And
sometimes, all of a sudden it turns out that time is back in the
recording as a value and the performance possesses the original
impact. Unfortunately with all the measuring, controlling and
comparing that is being done, we lose the tranquility of the listener.

 4. Stillife with umbrellas

 5. Sci-Fidelity

Twenty years ago an American engineer made some interesting
predictions in the ten year old High Fidelity magazine. Many a
development have been correctly predicted (naturally the validity is
1984), however finally he turned out to be overly optimistic. Possibly
the audio technology did not develope as fast between 1960 and 1980 as
in the two decades preceding 1960?

 6. Recording Sheet

    Reviews, criticism.

 7. Budapest Inter(?)national Fair

Due to our lack of hard currency available, the offering by foreign
electro-acoustic firms have greatly diminished: this fall not one
western firm had and thereby made a stand at the fair.

 8. Audioland

A survey of an exotic country somewhere between the North and the
South Poles just about in the middle (slightly in western direction)
with a circumference no more than 40 thousand kilometers. We introduce
the inhabitants, their history and way of life and finally their
favorite animal the Loud-Ness Monster (in front of a B & K cage).

 9. Interview

With the director of MEEI (Hungarian Institute for Testing
Electrical Equipments) about the relationship between the Institute
and the electronics of entertainment. (Hifi Magazin has been using the
lab instruments of MEEI from the beginning, and from this point of
view it does not take the back seat in comparison with any western
    publication.)

10. What's New in the Tower

At last complete Hi-Fi sets are always available in Hungary (in the
form of a tower), however one can not listen to decent music in the
retail outlets. Souped up high and low sounds, total Loudness on-it
seems the priests of Hungarian commerce are not in control of the
    audio liturgy.

11. The Yellow Brick Road

    (Press digest)
HiFi Stereophonie, Hi-Fi News & Record Review, Hi-Fi Answers, Audio.

12. Monitor on the Monitor

The subject of our poster: Tannoy Classic Monitor, the new studio
speaker of Hungaroton. Six select groups make judgements about the
sound of Tannoy. In our opinion this sound is highly coloured, the
design is obsolete, even if the reproduction of transients is superior
to that of the modern small BBC-monitors.

13. What Is To Be Measured On a Tape Deck

The measuring technology of tape decks for the laymen. Among others
it focuses on the shady side of the manufacturers and their specs.

14. Variations on an Orion - 2.

    (Orion SE 260 amplifier)

15. Polimeriad

Control test of Hungarian tapes. Our judgement: these tapes (not in
quality terms but in their consistent inconsistency) are not worthy of
    the trust of our consumers.

16. Presenting...

Pioneer PL-2 recordplayer and Akai CS-F 12 cassette deck as well as
    Pioneer's new little amp A-5.

17. New Phono Preamp!

In our constructor contest three finalists made the grade. We are
presenting one of these circuits. As an alternative (and for others to
I control our judgement) we are publishing the comparable circuits of
the excellent NAD 3020 amp, with the firm's permission.
