HiFi Magazin 8. 1982/1.

    Our English Synopsis

 1. Audio Culture

    (Editorial notes)
Hifi Magazin is primarily for those living in Hungary, spending
forints. Many people are in the position to spend abroad their own (or
their uncle's) dollars, however we practically never give purchasing
tips to private citizens, visiting foreign countries or corresponding
with foreigners, due to the virtual chaos in the global market.
Nonetheless, rarely we do find equipment that in our opinion is
outstanding in its price range. This is the reason why we are
calling the Hungarian Hi-Fi fan's attention to the NAD 3020 amp,
though not available in Hungary it is relatively inexpensive abroad.

 3. Compression of Dynamics

In the 6th issue of Hifi Magazin we presented diagrams of a short
segment of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, based on 14 different
recordings (Anatomy of a Crescendo). Our present argumentation is
related: what kinds of dynamics can be expected of recordings and what
could be tolarated by a living room (let alone the neighbor). As
usual, the opinion of audiophiles and Soundmen diverge. The latter
group seems to forget that in reality dynamics are not less but always
more than the signal to noise ratio. Noise never dominates totally the
    pianissimos.

 4. Hungarosound

We are attempting to pass a subjective judgement on the technical
quality of Hungarian records with special attention to the latest
digital (hybrid) editions. (Tchaikovsky's Stringserenade and
Dvorak's Serenade; Bartók: Bluebird's Castle; Haydn: Harmoniemesse.)

 5. Demo Records

To judge Hi-Fi equipment one should consider its ability to
reproduce the material faithfully the way it is recorded by the
soundman on a record. But who knows exactly what the soundman has
really done? Demo records provide information in this respect also
consequently they are necessary (but not sufficient) to evaluate Hi-Fi
equipments. Ortofon's demo recording is already available in Hungary.
(Some outstanding demo records from Hifi Magazin's Collection: JBL
Sessions, Opus 3: Image of Depth, recordings by ATR as well as by Mark
Levinson; Miller & Kreisel: Bottom End Musical Bass Transient Test.)

 6. Recording Sheet

    Reviews, criticism.

 7. The Polimerian Knot

To continue the examination of the recording tape Polimer we present
various views on the quality of recording tapes available in Hungary.
Preamp Championship 65 Not long ago we invited audiophile engineers
and amateur tinkerers to create a better preamp. Two dozen black boxes
have been examined and the sound quality of the best ones is indeed a
match for choice equipment. (Control through Ortofon MC 30/T-30, Quad
    405, Spendor BC1's.)

 8. Taperecorders

 9. The Yellow Brick Road

    (Press digest)
HiFi Stereophonie, Hi-Fi News & Record Rewiev, Hi-Fi Answers, Audio,
    L'Audiophile.

10. The Competition of Pre-Preamps

11. Mighty Midget

Little ones can be strong. In recent years the Best Buy (subject of
our poster) is the NAD 3020 amp. Hearsay is confirmed by our own
    tests.

12. Presenting

Domestically produced Hi-Fi towers (Videoton and Orion), Technics
magnetic and moving coil cartridges (EPC-205C Mk 3, EPC 310 MC, EPC
300 MC) as well as the demo disc by Ortofon.
