HiFi Magazin 6. 1981/2.

    Our English Synopsis

 1. Audio Culture

    (Editorial Notes)
Litmus test: how many carats qualify for being a Golden Ear? Is there
such as a thing as an infallible Audio Guru? Conclusively is there a
sure basis for comparison for amplifiers and speakers? If there is no
such thing in classical music what about pop? Tolerance in equipment
can be measured in percentages or less, Plus-Minus, mostly in one
dimension. For an audio critic tolerance in judgement is much greater
and in more dimensions, depending on the agility of the soundman, the
jury's taste, what is the audience'expection etc.

 2. Soundservice

Space for those desiring to inquire, needing advice, wishing to
comment or argue or even advertize.

 3. The Anatomy of Crescendo

Hi-Fi fans light-heartedly juggle with 60-70 dB. How far should real
dynamic range extend in recordings? In Beethoven's 5th symphony for
instance, in the transitional attaca with its rousing crescendo?
Testing 14 various recordings we could not find a greather 30 dB
difference between pianissimo and fortissimo. Such 30 dB could be
found on Toscanini's 1939 recording as well though some recent stereo
recordings had a range of no more than 20 dB.

 4. Stringserenade in Double Digits

The first domestically produced digital (or hybrid) record. The
program has been recorded on Sony PCM 1600. We can soon pass judgement
on sound quality. Program consists of Tschaikoswky's Stringserenade
    and Dvorak's Serenade.

 5. Magic Flutes of Half a Century

    Discography of Mozart's opera.

 6. Recording Sheet

    Reviews, criticism.

 7. Tower a2-f2

Chess move by Videoton? Not really, this is a Hi-Fi tower, the letters
and numbers stand for a cooperation. Two components (tape recorder and
recordplayer) are provided by Akai, two further links (tuner and
amplifier) are manufactured in Fehérvár. A promising step in the
    Far-East Opening.

 8. Home Recording - Studio Recording

The lion is a kind of cat, smaller in size but the specs are similar.
This is the way with smaller and larger recorders. Are they of the
same species? If not, when have they diverged in their course of
development? That was the subject of conversation in the Mechanikai
Laboratórium, the domain of Hungarian studio recorders.
Illustration: Akai GX 4000D, Revox B77 and the ML STM-600 studio
recorder, with their main components, parameters, standards.

 9. The Yellow Brick Road

    (Press digest)
HiFi Stereophonie, HiFi News & Record Review, Audio.

10. Black Power

Our Playmate of the Month is not a pretty receiver, not an attractive
feminine cassette deck but the very embodiment of masculine power: the
Harman-Kardon Citation 16 power amplifier. The Hungarian Radio is
using this type in their musical studios. Our measurements are
substantiated by subjective listenung as well. Comparison: Quad 405
and Radford STA 25 (tube) power amp.

11. Disorder of Cable

    (Impedance and signal level)
Lets make order in the jungle of wires and couplings.

12. Orion Tower II.

Modifications before mass production on the Orion equipment presented
    in our previous issue.

13. How Many dBs Rumble?

Depends on how it is measured. Starting from now our test will be
    fivefold on the recordplayer's rumble.

14. Presenting

Three new recordplayer (Tesla MC 400, Pioneer PL-100, Akai AP-30D),
one RIAA-preamp and Videoton Aida receiver with speakers.

15. MOD

By mass acclimation we will try to mare the well distributed, very
cheap dubiously Hi-Fi Orister amp presentable.

16. Between Takes
