Our English Synopsis 1. Audio Culture (Editorial notes) 2. Soundservice Space for those desiring to inquire, needing advice, wishing to comment or argue or even to advertize. 3. Solti, Karajan, Dorati Looking back: a selection of classical imported records available at Hungarian retail outlets during 1979. Much of the imported records are operatic recitals, needed to augment domestic supply. 4. Sowiet Record Weeks 5. Record Sheet We are catching up with ourselves: we have reviewed virtually all recent Hungarian classical releases. We are planning to review imported classical as well as pop recordings. We are compiling the opinions of well known critics and musicians pertaining to the necessity of HiFi listening in judging musical performance. 6. Page of Mirages How to make sure that your stylus is in order; how to obtain a microscope; the need for domestically made test records for the proper setting of turntables. 7. Presenting: Pioneer CT-506 The cheapest in the line of better Pioneer decks, yet the most expensive cassette recorder on the local market to date. Its specifications rival reel to reel figures, however subjective testing belies such claims. Nevertheless the CT-506 will serve as our basis for future comparisons of cassette decks. This will be the set for future imports to surpass. 8. "Dummy Head" in closet 9. Orion Tower At long last at the Budapest International Fair in September a Hungarian manufacturer, Orion has introduced something that made the fans' hearts throb: a HiFi tower of separates. Among the components, namely the speakers, turntable, cassette deck (designed intentionally without Dolby), amplifier and tuner, the latter two are the most promising. 10. A Hungarian in London As Hungarians wander around the world, only a few will travel with the unique aim of checking out retailer's showrooms. Our reporter doggedly pursues his aim of visiting all the places where speakers are displayed in London. 11. Book critic 12. Our Starphoto: Soundcraftsmen 20-12A The second tier of popular HiFi towers are often occupied by equalizers. The subject of our inquiry is the well known Soundcraftsmen 20-I2A Audio Frequency Equalizer. Our judgement: its purported aim, i.e. to improve listing conditions of living rooms by electronic means is not only unsuccessful, but if possible it worsens the original sound. To remain on the positive side, our test does provide our readers with the possibility of finding out some details about frequency response and also about the relátionship between space and time inherent in music. 13. Test: Turntables An appreciation of turntables owned by Hungarian HiFi fans. Basically in tune with test results abroad: we cannot recommend any type of turntables without serious modifications. Our recommendations for better pickups are based on suggestion provided (in our opinion) the most reliable source, namely Hi-Fi Choice: Cartridges and Headphones, Sportscene Publishers Ltd., London, 79. 14. Instruments and Tones Gábor Lehotka organnist and Dr. Kilian Szigeti, noted expert of organ building discuss the principles behind organ building in the Baroque age. They talk about the instrument reconstructed along these principles (situated in the Music School of Vác). 15. Omega Arsenal Witchlike dance movements on stage, vibration of fingers on strings, on drumsticks, on keyboards; hair bowing, light and smoke swirling, screams from this world intertwined with sounds seemingly from outer space. Five people on the stage. Or on the record jacket. Rehearsel is different, another image appears on the picture. The unknown sixth: the soundman, comrade in arms of musicians and singers. The right man to introduce Omega Arsenal. 16. Jazz A real treat for the fans. Three leading performers in three weeks in Hungary: Charlie Byrd, Leonyd Csizsik, Albert Mangelsdorff. 17. Hair The old film in a new cinematic version. This time without the usual long delay Hair will be shown in Hungary from January on. 18. The Revox-panel
